Student Accommodation

When you study in Australia, you will have a reasonably wide range of accommodation options. The facilities that you get are based on the type of accommodation acquired. While a few Australian universities provide university housing, many students may prefer off-campus living arrangements.

On-Campus Housing

While on-campus accommodation is limited in availability, Australian universities provide housing for students. However, it is advisable to apply for on-campus accommodation in advance, primarily while applying for admission to that particular university. The on-campus accommodation may cost around $110 to $280 per week.

Some universities in Australia are also known to rent apartments close to the on-campus property for students. This option provides security through university housing. Students can also enjoy self-catered living in these apartments.

Residential Colleges

Students applying for residential colleges will find it more expensive compared to halls of residence. Residential colleges mainly provide students with accommodation, meals, and cleaning services, while meeting other social and academic needs. Therefore, the expenses are comparatively higher than the halls of residence. That being said, residence halls offer meals and cleaning services and self-catering facility options.

Homestay

Students are also given the option of living with an Australian family, called the homestay program. This program is mainly for secondary students or those enrolled in short-term English courses. The institution’s accommodation services maintain a register of approved and reliable homestay providers. This program enables a student to settle into Australian life while integrating a few lifestyle habits. The approximate cost of a homestay program is $235 to $325 per week, considering the type of room, single or shared, etc. Meals are provided along with self-catering homestay options.

Hostel and Guest House Accommodation

Compared to on-campus or homestay accommodations, the hostel and guest house living options are less expensive. They cost around $90 to $150 per week. The facilities provided include a kitchen and bathroom, where students avail self-catering services.

Rental Property

Another preferred option by students choosing to study in Australia is renting a property. The most common choice is a shared rental that costs approximately $95 to $215 per week, whereas a single rental may cost around $185 to $440 per week.

Generally, students have to spend on household furniture as these rentals are rarely furnished. Students have to pay the month’s rent upfront, including the security payment.
